Caring for Older Pets

You have had your pet for a while, either from puppyhood or from a rescue situation, and they are a part of your life now!

Time doesn't seem to matter, and the joy your pet brings to your life is measurable! But as the years pass, you begin to notice some changes.

These changes can be startling, especially if you have never cared for an older pet. Comfy Cozy specializes in working with older pets, and these are some of the challenges we have seen that can take pet owners by surprise.

  1. More visits to the vet. As your pet ages, more issues come up that require veterinary treatment. It can be a shock to go from a primarily healthy pet to a pet taking more medications for various ailments.

  2. A decrease in appetite. This can be the hardest thing to witness for a pet owner. When your pet doesn't eat well, it affects everything else. Eating is required for many of the medications your vet may prescribe, and weight loss doesn't help when your pet needs to take them.

  3. Joint issues. Older age can be tough on pets, especially if they are prone to arthritis, as some breeds tend to be. Joint supplements can help, but pets usually don't understand that they aren't a youngster anymore.

  4. More separation anxiety. As your pets get older, sometimes they will develop anxiety when you leave the house. This could be related to several factors, but it can be startling for pet owners with older pets who develop separation anxiety later in life. It is not that there is anything wrong; they want reassurance that you are there for them.

Working with your pet's new challenges can be difficult, but refer to this site for more information.
